Charged with first-degree murder, concealing a dead body and defiling a dead body in the disappearance of his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, a nurse last heard from in July 2024, Bhatt has pleaded not guilty. His jury trial began Oct. 5, 2026. Her body has not been found.
Bhatt's jury trial opened in Prince William County Circuit Court with jury selection on Oct. 5, 2026, and opening statements on Oct. 7.2013 By Oct. 21, prosecutors had called more than 40 witnesses, and Judge Kimberly Irving told them she was "not confident" they could finish on the schedule they had given, ordering both sides to cut cumulative evidence.2726 In the fourth week, beginning Oct. 26, the jury heard testimony about internet searches recovered from Bhatt's work account and phone, a state forensic scientist's finding that blood in the saw was "very likely" his wife's, bags recovered from donation bins, water use at the home, and bank and car-sale records; more than 70 witnesses had testified by Oct. 30.31333235
Bhatt has not been convicted. Everything in this section is an allegation by prosecutors or police, or testimony at a trial that is still under way. Testimony is evidence for the jury to weigh, not a finding. Bhatt has pleaded not guilty to all three charges.2023
Mamta Kafle Bhatt, 28, was a nurse who had immigrated to the United States from Nepal in 2021.5 She began work at UVA Prince William Medical Center in Manassas on July 8, 2024, after working at Inova in Fairfax, according to the Prince William Times.4 She and Bhatt married in 2021, bought a home in Manassas Park in 2023, and had a daughter in August 2023, the Prince William Times reported.4
A former colleague testified that surveillance video from work on July 27, 2024, was the last time she saw or heard from her.19 A T-Mobile records custodian testified that the last outgoing call from a phone tied to her was on July 29, two days before the date Bhatt gave police as the last time he saw her.16 Her mother, who lived in Nepal, testified through an interpreter that the two spoke “a daily basis, like, morning and evening,” and that the calls stopped suddenly in July 2024.14 She testified that when Bhatt finally spoke with her a few days later, he said Mamta had gone to stay with friends.14
She missed a shift on Aug. 1, 2024, without calling in.25 Her nurse manager, the first prosecution witness, testified that she called police for a welfare check when Kafle Bhatt missed work and could not be reached.1525 According to the Prince William Times timeline, Bhatt told officers at the door on Aug. 2 that the couple was separating, that he last saw her on July 31, and that she might be visiting family in New York or Texas; police later learned she had no biological family in the U.S.4 Bhatt reported her missing on Aug. 5.425 Prosecutors say she missed an Aug. 5 citizenship interview and her daughter’s first birthday on Aug. 20 without contacting anyone.13
Police executed a search warrant at the home on Aug. 21, 2024, and Police Chief Mario Lugo named Bhatt a person of interest the same day.4 Bhatt was arrested on Aug. 22 on a felony charge of concealing a dead body, and a judge denied bond on Aug. 26, finding him a flight risk and a danger to the community, according to the Prince William Times.4 Lugo later said, “The forensic unit of the Prince William County police said it was one of the worst crime scenes they’ve ever seen.”6 Police executed more than 40 search warrants at about 20 locations, according to the Prince William Times.6
A report from the Virginia Department of Forensic Science, filed in the court record, said blood on parts of a reciprocating saw “matched a DNA profile created from Mamta Kafle Bhatt’s hairbrush,” the Prince William Times reported.9 DNA analysis also linked blood found in the bedroom and bathroom to her, according to police.8
A Prince William County grand jury indicted Bhatt on Dec. 2, 2024, on first-degree murder and defiling a dead body, alleging that he “willfully, deliberately and with premeditation” killed his wife between July 29 and Aug. 3, 2024.6 He also faces the original concealment charge.7 Under Virginia law, first-degree murder is a Class 2 felony; concealing a dead body “with malicious intent and to prevent detection of an unlawful act,” and willfully and intentionally physically defiling a dead human body, are each Class 6 felonies.123 Lugo said evidence indicated the body had been cut up, which led to the defiling charge, and said, “I feel we have a strong case for not having the body.”5 No federal charges against Bhatt appear in the sources reviewed.
Jurors were sworn on Oct. 7, 2026: 12 jurors and five alternates.12 Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Matthew Sweet told them, “July 30th, 2024, marks the beginning of a series of the most horrific and violent crimes against his wife.”15 He described Bhatt as having been “experiencing the American dream to the fullest,” and said, “Then on July 30, 2024, he throws it all away.”13 Sweet told jurors to expect evidence of pooled blood on the bedroom carpet, drag marks toward the bathroom, blinds removed and placed in a closet, scrubbed carpet and furniture moved over stains, unusually high water use, and the purchase of a three-pack of knives, two of which have not been found.13 He said Bhatt put remains in trash bags and threw them in compactors in Manassas Park and Fairfax, and that internet searches before her disappearance included “Need divorce, spouse dies in Virginia.”13
Chief Public Defender Tracey Lenox told jurors, “There is a sort of black hole at the time of Mamta Kafle’s disappearance and it’s a hole where evidence should be.”14 She said prosecutors would offer “ideas, guesses, but not fact,” acknowledged that the couple had discussed divorce, and told jurors to weigh witnesses’ possible bias and embellishment.13
A close friend, Sarita Neupane, testified that months before the disappearance Mamta Kafle Bhatt stayed at her house for more than two weeks and told her that the couple fought and that Bhatt hit her; she said she saw a bruise in a video Kafle Bhatt showed her.15 On cross-examination, Neupane said she never saw Bhatt hit his wife and that everything she knew about the relationship came from Kafle Bhatt.15 A former roommate testified that Bhatt offered her a discounted room in exchange for helping his wife with English and settling in, that she missed a call from Kafle Bhatt on July 28, 2024, and that Bhatt later approached her at a birthday party saying he “needed to tell me something.”2123 A babysitter testified that Bhatt dropped off the couple’s daughter unbathed and in stained clothing.25 A realtor testified that the couple seemed happy at a mid-July 2024 dinner and that after the disappearance Bhatt asked him about selling the house off-market; on cross-examination he acknowledged that such a sale can lower some costs.26
A Prince William County detective testified that after investigators applied Bluestar, a chemical that reacts with blood, in the primary bedroom, “the lights were turned off, and the room lit up.”17 She testified that Bhatt suggested the gang MS-13 might be involved, which she found odd; no evidence linked the gang to the case.17 A former crime scene investigator testified that the bed appeared deliberately moved and that bathroom blinds with reddish-brown stains were found in a walk-in closet.17 An investigator unrolled an approximately 8-by-10-foot section of bedroom carpet before the jury and testified that a preliminary swab of a stain under it was positive for blood; he testified that a reddish-brown stain was found beneath the bathtub after it was removed.18
On cross-examination, the detective agreed that Bhatt never refused her access to any part of the house.17 A Bluestar expert acknowledged under defense questioning that the test is an investigative tool that “does not confirm the presence of blood.”18 The crime scene investigator said she did not know whether officers moved items before she arrived, and the defense has suggested that officers without proper protective equipment may have tainted the scene.2023
Store employees identified Bhatt in surveillance video buying garden gloves at a Home Depot on July 30, 2024, trash bags at a Lidl twice that day, a three-pack of kitchen knives and fruit at a Walmart on July 30, and carpet cleaner and cleaning supplies at a Walmart on July 31.221921 An apartment complex representative showed footage from July 30 and 31 of a blue Tesla at a dumpster and a person removing white and black bags.26 A former property manager in Falls Church testified that she saw Bhatt throw bags into a trash compactor twice, the second time wearing white gloves, and said he carried one bag “as if the bag were to break, if it were something heavy.”26 A gas station cashier testified about video of Bhatt carrying a bag from the Tesla’s trunk on Aug. 1; a witness said that item might have been paper.2223 The owner of a disposal company testified that a body would be hard to pick out among the trash his facilities handle.25
A landscaper, Jose Barajas Ayala, testified through an interpreter that Bhatt gave him a battery-powered Ryobi saw as payment for lawn work and that he turned it over to police in September 2024; he denied that he or his crew used it on human remains.2629 He said he accepted the saw before learning that Bhatt was accused of killing his wife.30 He said he had replaced the blade but put it back before giving the saw to police.28 The defense asked him who had access to his truck.26
A Home Depot security employee testified that a receipt and store video from June 2, 2024, showed a person resembling Bhatt buying a Ryobi saw, a blade and batteries at a Fairfax store.31 The lead crime scene investigator, Andrea Feldman, testified that she found reddish-brown stains, mainly near the handle and a vent, and hair-like strands inside the saw; “I believed it to be blood,” she said.3135 A police captain demonstrated a saw of the same model in the courtroom.31 On Oct. 27 a forensic scientist from the Virginia Department of Forensic Science testified that some samples, including one from inside the saw, were “very likely” Mamta Kafle Bhatt’s blood; she testified that the source of other blood samples from the home could not be determined, and that for two samples “no DNA typing results were obtained.”32
Detective Stephen Oxendine testified that bags Bhatt left in donation bins at a Chantilly gas station held clothing, shoes and bath mats, including a white trash bag and a bath mat with suspected bloodstains that tested presumptively positive for blood.3135 A public works official testified that records showed about 160 gallons of water used at the home in two hours on July 31, 2024; on cross-examination he said he never visited the home to check for leaks.31 A county crime scene investigator acknowledged on cross-examination that Bluestar is a presumptive test that can react to substances other than blood, and agreed that some officers entered the bedroom without gloves and touched furniture.31
A witness from the White House Military Office who reviewed searches made through Bhatt’s work account testified that on April 12, 2024, they included “how long does take to get married after spouse dies” and “what happened debt of died spouse.”31 Katherine Zaimis, a Prince William County police digital forensic examiner, testified to searches extracted from Bhatt’s phone, including “need divorce, spouse died in Virginia” on March 21, 2024; “human brain diagram” and “chicken farm near me” on July 30; and “missing person finding rate in Virginia” on Aug. 5.3335 She testified that other searches included “meat cutter” and whether a person can donate a baby to a friend.33 On cross-examination she acknowledged that she had selected the searches she considered relevant from a larger set, and that some browser searches had no timestamps.33 Text messages between the couple, including disagreements, were read aloud; Judge Irving overruled a defense objection to Zaimis characterizing one 2024 text from Bhatt as a threat, leaving its meaning to the jury, after the defense argued that the messages were originally in Nepali.3335
Bank representatives testified that accounts in Mamta Kafle Bhatt’s name were opened on Feb. 14, 2024, the day she called police to the home, and a CarMax manager testified that Bhatt sold his Tesla on Aug. 16, 2024, receiving about $3,771 after the loan was paid off.34 Neighbors testified that Bhatt never told them his wife was missing and that they learned of it from a Facebook post.35 Outside the jury’s presence on Oct. 29, the victim’s brother testified about statements she made to him in 2024 about feeling unsafe; the judge said she would allow some of those statements over the defense’s objections and rule on others after prosecutors lay a foundation.34
Jurors watched body-camera video of Bhatt’s early conversations with police and a recorded Aug. 12, 2024, interview with a Manassas Park police captain.1522 Asked to rate his honesty, Bhatt said, “I never lie,” and he described the marriage as “very good.”2223 Asked why he thought she left, he said, “I don’t know.”24 Prosecutors say his account of when he last saw her changed between July 29 and July 31.21 A Nepali journalist testified about a Facebook Live interview with Bhatt on Aug. 18, 2024; the defense challenged the translation and asked whether she knew police had told him not to discuss the case with the press.1619 A former detective confirmed on cross-examination that Bhatt let officers into his home and let them look at his phone and Tesla.26
The trial was set for seven weeks.12 On Oct. 21, 2026, Judge Irving told prosecutors, “I am not feeling confident in your ability to finish in the timing you gave us,” and said it would be “patently unfair” to cut into the defense’s time.27 At the end of the third week she told prosecutors, “I have a list of your experts sitting in front of me.”36 By Oct. 28 prosecutors planned to rest on Nov. 2.33
Bhatt immigrated to the United States from Nepal and is a U.S. citizen, according to the Kathmandu Post and the Prince William Times.204 He was 37 when he was charged with murder in December 2024.5 No sourced account of his childhood, family or schooling was found in the sources reviewed.
Bhatt served in the U.S. Army Reserve as an automated logistics specialist from June 2017 to February 2024, with no deployments, leaving with the rank of specialist, FOX 5 reported.7 He joined the Fairfax County Police Department as a recruit in June 2020 and was dismissed in November 2020 after struggling to meet the requirements of the role.7 The AP described him as a former government contractor.5
The couple married in 2021, before she moved to the United States.420 According to the Prince William Times, police responded to a call at the home in February 2024, when she told officers he had withheld her passport, green card and Social Security card and had destroyed her phone; the sources reviewed do not say whether any charge resulted.4 His lawyer told jurors the relationship was troubled and that the couple had discussed divorce.13 The defense has said he has no history of violence.20
No testimony, finding or on-record statement about Bhatt’s mental health was found in the sources reviewed.
Bhatt has been held without bond since his arrest on Aug. 22, 2024.425 He is represented by the public defender’s office.20 He maintains that he is innocent.11 The couple’s daughter is being cared for by relatives.17
Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Matthew Sweet told jurors Bhatt "killed, defiled and concealed" his wife, pointing to pooled blood and drag marks in the home, purchases of knives, cleaning products and trash bags, trips to dumpsters and trash compactors, internet searches, and a power saw Bhatt gave a landscaper that prosecutors say tested positive for her blood and DNA.1317
Chief Public Defender Tracey Lenox told jurors there is "a black hole" where evidence should be and that prosecutors will offer "ideas, guesses, but not fact."13 The defense argues the circumstantial case is weak, points to Bhatt's cooperation with police and a possible language barrier, and has questioned whether the scene was disturbed before investigators arrived and the limits of the Bluestar blood test.202318
